چکیده

Abstract Following reports of an invasive snail causing crop damage in the expansive Mwea irrigation scheme Kenya, samples snails and associated egg masses were collected sent to CABI laboratories UK for molecular identification. DNA barcoding analyses using cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene gave preliminary identification as Pomacea canaliculata , widely considered have potential be one most invertebrates waterways systems worldwide which is already issues throughout much south-east Asia. To best our knowledge, this first documented record P. confirmed established population continental Africa. This timely shows benefit need robust species identifications: even a curated sequence database such that provided by Barcoding Life Data system may require additional checks on veracity underlying identifications. We found mass tested identical barcode adult snails, allowing identifications made more rapidly. Part nuclear elongation factor 1 alpha was sequenced confirm not / maculata interspecies hybrid. Given impact Asia, there assessment risk Africa, implementation appropriate response Kenya elsewhere manage new threat agriculture environment.

Spatial variation in adult sex ratio across multiple scales in the invasive golden apple snail, Pomacea canaliculata.

Adult sex ratio (ASR) has critical effects on behavior and life history and has implications for population demography, including the invasiveness of introduced species. ASR exhibits immense variation in nature, yet the scale dependence of this variation is rarely analyzed. In this study, using the generalized multilevel models, we investigated the variation in ASR across multiple nested spatia...

Immune Defenses of the Invasive Apple Snail Pomacea canaliculata (Caenogastropoda, Ampullariidae): Phagocytic Hemocytes in the Circulation and the Kidney

Hemocytes in the circulation and kidney islets, as well as their phagocytic responses to microorganisms and fluorescent beads, have been studied in Pomacea canaliculata, using flow cytometry, light microscopy (including confocal laser scanning microscopy) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Three circulating hemocyte types (hyalinocytes, agranulocytes and granulocytes) were distinguishe...

Endosymbiotic and Host Proteases in the Digestive Tract of the Invasive Snail Pomacea canaliculata: Diversity, Origin and Characterization

Digestive proteases of the digestive tract of the apple snail Pomacea canaliculata were studied. Luminal protease activity was found in the crop, the style sac and the coiled gut and was significantly higher in the coiled gut. Several protease bands and their apparent molecular weights were identified in both tissue extracts and luminal contents by gel zymography: (1) a 125 kDa protease in sali...

Isolation and Characterization of Sixteen Polymorphic Microsatellite Loci in the Golden Apple Snail Pomacea canaliculata

We report the characterization of 16 polymorphic microsatellite markers in the golden apple snail, Pomacea canaliculata, a pest registered in the list of "100 of the world's worst invasive alien species". The fast isolation by AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism) of sequences containing repeats (FIASCO) method was used to isolate microsatellite loci, and polymorphism was explored with ...

Effects of absolute fasting on reproduction and survival of the invasive apple snail Pomacea canaliculata in its native range

A South American freshwater gastropod, the apple snail Pomacea canaliculata, has become a driver of ecosystemic changes in wetlands and an important rice pest after its introduction to various parts of the world, mainly Asia. The objective of this study was to study the effect of an abrupt interruption in food availability in the short term (up to 4 weeks) and long term (up to 8 months) on surv...
